Understanding the Norwood scale and graft planning

The Norwood-Hamilton scale classifies male pattern hair loss into seven stages, from minimal recession at the temples (Stage I) to extensive loss across the crown and top of the scalp (Stage VII). The stage at which a patient presents determines the approximate number of grafts required, the complexity of the surgery and the strategic considerations around donor preservation.

A Norwood III Vertex case typically requires between 2,000 and 2,800 grafts. A Norwood V case requires significantly more and more careful planning. A Norwood VI corrective case — where a previous procedure has produced an unsatisfactory result — presents additional challenges. View the complete before and after gallery at Hairmedico for cases across all Norwood stages.

What to expect from your results

Hair transplant results develop gradually over a twelve-month period. The transplanted grafts enter a resting phase in the first two to four weeks after surgery, during which the hair shafts shed. This is normal and expected. New growth begins at approximately three to four months, with significant visible improvement typically apparent at six months.

The final result — full density, natural texture and complete integration with the surrounding hair — is assessed at twelve months. Patients are encouraged to review verified patient reviews before making any decision about surgery.
