Female hair restoration

Female Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplantation in women requires a different diagnostic approach and different surgical planning than in men. Thorough candidate selection — establishing that the hair loss is permanent, stable and amenable to surgical correction — is the most important step.

The medical assessment, surgical planning, hairline design, graft extraction, recipient-site creation and implantation are personally performed by Dr. Arslan Musbeh. FUE, Sapphire FUE and DHI are surgical techniques — Dr. Arslan Musbeh selects or combines the appropriate method after personally evaluating the patient's donor capacity, hair-loss pattern, hair characteristics and long-term needs.

Why female hair loss is different

Female androgenetic alopecia typically presents as diffuse thinning across the top of the scalp, with relative preservation of the frontal hairline. Unlike male pattern hair loss, the donor area in women may itself be affected by miniaturisation — meaning that grafts extracted from this area may not be permanent. This is why thorough trichoscopic assessment of the donor area is essential in female candidates.

Diagnosis before surgery

Before any surgical planning, the cause of hair loss must be established. Female hair loss has many potential causes — androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, thyroid disorders, iron deficiency. Surgery is appropriate only for hair loss that is permanent, stable and caused by a condition amenable to surgical correction. Dr. Musbeh reviews blood work and conducts a trichoscopic assessment before making any surgical recommendation.

The unshaven approach

Most female patients prefer an unshaven procedure. DHI technique is well-suited to this, as it does not require pre-made recipient sites and can be performed without shaving the recipient area. The ability to implant into existing hair without shaving is a significant practical advantage for female patients.

Who is a suitable candidate?

The ideal female candidate has stable, permanent hair loss, a healthy donor area with adequate density and minimal miniaturisation, and a defined area of loss — such as traction alopecia at the temples, a widened central parting, or hairline recession. Women with diffuse androgenetic alopecia and a compromised donor area are generally not suitable candidates.

Candidate suitability

Who is this procedure for?

  • Women with traction alopecia and a healthy donor area
  • Women with hairline recession from androgenetic alopecia
  • Women with a widened central parting and stable hair loss
  • Women whose hair loss has been stable for at least 12 months
  • Women who have had reversible causes excluded through blood work

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can women have FUE hair transplants?

Yes, provided they are suitable candidates. The key requirements are a stable, permanent area of hair loss and a healthy donor area with adequate density and minimal miniaturisation.

Does a female hair transplant require shaving?

Not necessarily. DHI technique allows the procedure to be performed without shaving the recipient area, which is preferred by most female patients.

Why are some women not suitable candidates?

Women with diffuse androgenetic alopecia often have miniaturisation in the donor area, meaning that extracted grafts may not be permanent. Women with reversible hair loss should address the underlying cause before considering surgery.
